The Hobbit Board Game is a strategy and adventure game in which players help Bilbo on his journey while collecting treasures and facing dangers.
Setup
Each player gets a character board showing three tracks: Initiative, Cunning, and Strength. Markers begin a little above the bottom.
Lay out the main map board showing Middle-earth routes, starting at Bag End and ending at the Dragon’s lair.
Place the Bilbo token at Bag End and Smaug at the “Kill Smaug” space.
Sort Event cards and Adventure cards by numbers (1 to 4). For each number, stack Event cards on top of Adventure cards and shuffle the stack. Do this for all four numbers.
Shuffle Dwarf cards, deal five cards to each player, and place the rest as a deck.
Give each player three provision tokens.
Place the Dragon tiles face down, and put the jewels, Ring token, dice, and leftover provisions near the board.
Turn Structure
Event Phase
- Reveal the next Event card in the current stack.
- Depending on its type (Travelling, Ability, Gift), players respond:
- Travelling: Players secretly play one Dwarf card. The lowest card acts first. Move Bilbo along the route, then resolve effects (gain provisions, lose life, adjust stats).
- Ability: Players bid using Dwarf cards; the winning bidder takes the Ability card.
- Gift: Immediately apply benefits (stat boost, extra provisions, etc.).
- Discard the used Event card (unless it becomes a player’s Ability card).
- If Bilbo lands on an Adventure space, discard remaining Events in that stack and move to Adventure phase.
Adventure Phase
- That space gives a number of provisions equal to its value to each player.
- The player with highest Initiative looks at the first Adventure card.
- In turn order, players may choose to attempt or pass (must spend at least 2 provisions to attempt).
- To attempt:
- Roll all five dice.
- You may reroll up to as many dice as your Cunning allows.
- Add your Initiative & Strength bonuses, and spend provisions or use cards to boost your total.
- If you have the Ring, you may change one die face.
- If your total meets or exceeds the difficulty, you win the jewels on that card.
- If you fail, draw a Dragon tile and suffer its effect (lose provisions, lower a stat, push Smaug forward).
- After all have had chance, discard or return the card, then reveal next Adventure (if any).
Smaug & Game End
- Smaug may advance when players fail challenges or via Dragon tiles.
- If Smaug reaches a critical location early, the game may end for everyone.
- Otherwise, the game continues through all Event and Adventure stacks until the last one is resolved (unless Smaug causes an early end).
- At the end, the player with the most jewels wins.
- If there is a tie, the player with more provisions wins.
- If still tied, they share victory.
Strategic Tips
- Use Dwarf cards at key moments — for turn order, bids, or surprises.
- Balance your stats — don’t let one of Initiative, Cunning or Strength stay weak.
- Manage your provisions carefully — they let you attempt adventures and save you in trouble.
- Try to avoid too many failures — each failed attempt strengthens Smaug.
- Timing is important — knowing when to push forward vs. hold back can decide the winner.
