Publication & History

The warforged first appeared in earlier editions of Dungeons & Dragons, tied to the Eberron setting. In 5e, their rules and lore were solidified in Eberron: Rising from the Last War. Before that, they appeared in playtest or variant form in Wayfinder’s Guide to Eberron and Unearthed Arcana.

What Is a Warforged?

Warforged are sentient constructs. They blend metal, wood, stone, and magical energy with living traits. They can think, feel, and grow. Though they look like machines or armor, they are alive in many ways.

Originally built for the Last War by House Cannith, warforged were once weapons, but later gained freedom and agency.

Traits & Mechanics in 5e

These are the key features of a warforged in 5th Edition:

  • Ability Score Increase: +2 to Constitution, +1 to another ability of your choice.
  • Age & Aging: They do not age in a normal way and are immune to magical aging.
  • Size: Medium.
  • Speed: 30 feet.
  • Constructed Resilience: They gain resilience against poisons (advantage on saves, resistance to poison damage), immunity to disease, don’t need to eat, drink, breathe, and can’t be magically put to sleep.
  • Sentry’s Rest: Instead of sleeping, they enter a motionless, inactive state for six hours during a long rest. They are not unconscious, and can see and hear normally.
  • Integrated Protection: They have built-in defensive plating. They get a +1 bonus to AC. To don new armor, they must incorporate it into their body over one hour; removing armor also takes one hour.
  • Specialized Design: They gain proficiency in one skill and one tool of their choice.
  • Languages: They speak Common and one other language of choice.

Differences from Earlier Versions

In the playtest versions, warforged had subraces (Envoy, Juggernaut, Skirmisher), each with different bonuses and features. The final version in Rising from the Last War removed mandatory subrace distinctions and made their rules more streamlined. Integrated protection was made more flexible.

Role in Campaigns & Gameplay Tips

  • Warforged are best suited for settings with or tied to Eberron lore, though they can be adapted to other settings.
  • Their resilience makes them good for dangerous or harsh environments — poisons, disease, lack of food or air won’t hamper them.
  • Because donning or doffing armor is slow, plan ahead — they are not as nimble in sudden equipment changes.
  • Their rest style (Sentry’s Rest) can affect watch and guard logic in campaigns: a warforged can stay alert while others sleep.
  • The combination of durability and flexibility in ability scores allows warforged to fit many roles — from front-line fighters to more utility or support builds.
