Top Physics Work Experience Opportunities for Year 12 Students in the UK

Year 12 college students within the UK have a wealth of opportunities to benefit arms-on enjoy in physics thru numerous work experience applications supplied by leading universities and studies institutions. These packages provide insights into instructional research, practical laboratory paintings, and potential career paths in physics.

Through a series of workshops, lab sessions, and a project, the Physics work experience year 12 aims to provide students with a comparable interest in physics and astronomy an idea of what it’s like to work at an academic, research-based institution. This is your opportunity to learn about exciting physics issues, network with top experts, and experience what it’s like to be a researcher.

Presenting a research poster at a conference-style event at the conclusion of Work Experience Week is the project’s goal.

One excellent approach to gain insight into the everyday lives of a physicist is through work experience. Finding the best location to obtain worthwhile job experience may take some time, but there are many options. Since many programs operate in the spring and summer, it is ideal to begin your search early in the autumn term.

Speak with local businesses or universities. There will be specialised departments at universities for the topic you are interested in. Remember to look over their website before contacting them. You could already have the answers.

The following links may be useful. Please note each programme will have its own eligibility criteria.

  • The Schools’ Observatory – For a week of lectures and seminars, as well as to finish a professional research project, students in year 12 (or equivalent) attend the Astrophysics Research Institute.
  • STFC – Summer placements
  • Nuffield – Placements for year 12 (or equivalent)
  • The Student Ladder – List of year 12 programmes

Where to find… general science work experience

Many schools provide Year 10 pupils a week or two to complete job experience. You can then plan your own work experience over the summer break following Year 12 or Year 13.

Asking local organisations in your region whether they might provide you with some work experience is the best course of action; many will do so even if they are not giving a formal job. At least six months before you wish to begin your placement, begin your search. We won’t sugarcoat it: it can be difficult to find lab work experience if you’re in year 10 but if you can get work experience in the office of a science company, this will still be extremely valuable for your CV.

Below is a detailed review of a number of the top physics work revel in possibilities to be had in 2025.

University of Sheffield – Physics Research Experience Week

Scheduled for 21–25 July 2025, the University of Sheffield offers a non-residential software in which students can delve into regions consisting of quantum technology, astronomy, particle physics, and materials and organic physics. Participants interact with an educational group of workers, discover research specialisms, and benefit from a flavor of university lifestyles.

University of York – Year 12 Work Experience

From 7–eleven July 2025, the University of York presents a hybrid software combining online sessions and an on-campus day. Students adopt research initiatives, attend lectures, and engage with modern-day undergraduates. The application culminates in a poster presentation, providing a glimpse into university-level studies.

Queen Mary University of London – Year 12 Work Experience Week

Between 14–18 July 2025, Queen Mary University hosted a week-long, non-residential application specializing in physics. Students participate in seminars, lab sessions, and collaborative studies initiatives, culminating in a poster presentation to an academic group of workers and friends.

University of Leeds – Year 12 Physics Work Experience Week

Also going for walks from 14–18 July 2025, the University of Leeds gives software where college students engage in workshops, lab periods, and research initiatives throughout five areas of physics. The week concludes with a conference-style poster presentation, supplying a platform to show off their findings.

University of Leicester – Year 12 Work Experience

Scheduled for 30 June – four July 2025, the University of Leicester’s application allows students to explore subjects like planetary technological know-how, area climate, and exoplanet research. Participants work on projects, attend lectures, and gain insights into college-stage physics research.

The Schools’ Observatory – Work Experience Week

From 7–11 July 2025, The Schools’ Observatory offers a non-residential program focusing on astrophysics. Students engage in talks, workshops, and collaborative studies initiatives, culminating in a poster presentation that simulates expert studies dissemination.

Imperial College London – Year 12 Work Experience Programme

Running from 30 June – four July 2025, Imperial College’s application affords insights into numerous studies regions, such as physics. Students take part in institution initiatives, attend talks on college programs, and present their paintings in an educational-style conference.

University of Oxford – Physics Summer Schools

Between 28 July – 1 August 2025, the University of Oxford gave  parallel summer school classes: the Physics Summer School and the NQCC Quantum Experience Summer School. These programs offer fingers-on experience in research, tutorials, and publicity to quantum technology groups.

University College London (UCL) – Physics and Astronomy Work Experience Week

Scheduled for 14–18 July 2025, UCL’s non-residential program includes lectures, organization activities, and possibilities to engage with researchers. Students have a complete view of reading physics on the university level.

University of Birmingham – Physics Work Experience
