Socket Size Chart Uses & Working

Sockets are tools that are commonly seen in our toolboxes. Socket sets come with different socket size charts that are in imperial and metric units, used for different operations. We need to select the required size for our applications. Socket size is defined by the size of the drive and socket head.  Socket sizes normally come in three size ranges: 1/4 inch, 3/8 inch, and 1/2 inch, with each able to handle different socket sizes for different uses. In this post, we will cover details for a socket wrench size chart in different units with a combination wrench size chart for practical understanding and uses.

What is a socket?

  • A socket is a tool whose one end connects with a ratchet or torque wrench that loosens or tightens a fastener through turning.
  • Socket work is performed performwith a combination of ratchets. The socket connects to one end of the ratchet due to the square drive connection. The second end of the socket is connected over the fastener.
  • Ratchets assist sockets in tightening fasteners during clockwise rotations and loosening them when rotating in an anti-clockwise direction.

Socket structure

  • Sockets come with a square design at one point. That is a square drive connector. that is used for connecting sockets with ratchets. This end is controlled with a ratchet.
  • The second end is called the head end. That end comes in different designs according to size and fastener types where the socket is used.

Different Types of Sockets

  • different types of sockets used according to ratchet design and fastener. Different socket sizes and shapes are explained here.

Hex Sockets

  • Hex sockets are a commonly used socket type. It also comes in 2 main types: hex 6 and bi-hex 12-point. Hex sockets come with square drive connectors that are used for connection with a ratchet and a hexagonal head on the other end that turns fasteners like nuts and bolts.

Screwdriver Sockets

  • Socket bits come with screwdriver bits and hex sockets. It connects the ratchet with the help of a square drive connector like a hex socket, and the second end of the socket bit is connected with the required design of the female recess over the fastener head.
  • It also comes with a Phillips screwdriver head, a flat-headed screwdriver head, and a Torx screwdriver head.
  • spline screwdriver head.
  • socket bits The two types are one-piece and two-piece. One-piece socket bits come with a screwdriver bit connected to the reverse side of the square drive connector.
  • The two-piece socket bit comes with a body design and a screwdriver bit that can be removably connected with a screw.

Pass-Through Sockets

  • This socket design is different compared to other socket designs since it does not come with a square-drive connector.
  • since it has been made for turning with a ratchet that is configured over the upperside of the socket. These sockets are a hollow design that helps longer fasteners to manage.
  • It is used for loosening nuts on long bolts where deep sockets are not preferred or work.

Spline Sockets

  • spline socket used to loosen or tighten spline fasteners and used for hex and bi-hex fasteners like nuts and bolts.
  • It preferred good socket types of fasteners that provide high torque on spline fasteners that are used for bi-hex fasteners and bi-hex sockets.

Impact Sockets

  • impact socket used to function with pneumatic impact wrenches and constructed with chrome molybdenum, which helps to work with continuous impact processes without damage. This socket comes with thick walls compared to standard sockets that have pins.
  • This socket is used for vehicles and aviation industry.

Torx Sockets

  • Torx sockets come with 6 points in heads that make a star-like design. It is used to fit Torx screws and also comes in different sizes.
  • Torx sockets are used for accurate level torque applications without any effect. It is used for heavy-duty applications.

Insulated Sockets

  • It has an insulated coating, also known as insulated sockets, that protects from current. It is used for AC and DC flow in devices. insulated sockets used in combination to an insulated ratchet.

Spark Plug Sockets

  • This socket comes with a fitting plug from the engine, according to the name. The spark plug socket comes with a rubber gasket that is placed in the inner area of the socket, holding the spark plug in place. It has different sizes of spark plugs.

Adjustable Multi Sockets

  • It comes with jaws that help to fit different-sized fasteners. so different-sized fastener sets through the help of the same socket.
  • This socket controls corners on fasteners since it applies force equally on the fastener.
  • These sockets are set with a turning external part of the socket that moves the socket jaws. that clamp over the head of a fastener

Universal Joint Sockets

  • universal joints used for reaching fasteners in different and not accessible positions that provide socket motion

SAE vs. Metric Socket Sizes

  • difference between SAE socket size and metric  used for USA mechanics operating on vehicles and domestic level. SAE sizes come with fractional inches, and metric sizes work with mm.
  • Some advanced vehicles use both systems, while US cars commonly used metric fasteners in the 1980s. Socket size charts in metric and standard give parallel sizing systems.
