How To Improve Employee Health In The Workplace

The workplace is an important place to improve for your employees. They come into the workplace every day for the most part, and that means they’re working in environments that should be safe and healthy for them.

We’ve learnt a lot from the pandemic, but some businesses may have slipped into old habits and are neglecting the health of the workplace as a result.

With that in mind, there are a few ways to improve employee health and ensure that fewer employees are falling ill due to conditions within the workplace.

Workplace environment and culture

When it comes to the office environment, look at the ways in which you can improve the surroundings. Improving air quality is helpful to ensure all of that nasty bacteria is being filtered out through air conditioning units, open windows on occasion where it’s warm enough, etc.

Think about putting hygienic hand drying in bathrooms to keep any bacteria from spreading through touch and on surfaces.

When it comes to the culture of the workplace, look at organising team-building activities as well as volunteering opportunities for charities or programs close to an employee’s heart and social events to keep everyone connected. Recognise those who go the extra mile in the workplace and offer appreciation in different ways.

The way the office space is set up should also be considered. Think about creating quiet zones for meditation, relaxation, and to bring peace to those who need it.

Physical health initiatives

There are several physical health initiatives worth exploring when it comes to improving employee health and well-being.

For example, it’s a good idea to encourage movement by implementing walking meetings, encouraging employees to take the stairs or walk as part of their daily commute where possible.

Nutrition is also incredibly important, so you could always offer a stocked kitchen full of healthy snacks and fresh, filtered water instead of any sugary drinks.

Offering discounted gym memberships, on-site yoga and step-count challenges are great for inspiring fitness and exercise for your teams. Don’t forget to incorporate ergonomic furniture so that you protect the health and wellness of your staff for years to come.

Mental health and well-being support

Your employees’ mental health and well-being are equally important as their physical health. So with that being said, you should be exploring how you can help them improve their mental health for the better.

Train your managers and anyone in senior positions who are responsible for others, to spot the signs of stress and ensure you have the processes in place for them to get help for their peers.

Having a healthy work-life balance is essential, too, but not all employees get that. That’s why it’s good to offer flexible working hours, remote work, and ensure everyone’s workloads are reasonable. Remember, not every individual in the workplace can handle the same amount of work.

Try to normalise conversations about mental health in the workplace and ensure everyone is looking after themselves with time off and regular breaks when in the workplace to prevent burnout.

These tips will be a great way of helping improve employee well-being and health in the workplace this year.
